Today we are going to check out the countries with the highest natural gas reserves based on Insider Monkey’s latest article. Surprisingly or not, the two-thirds of the world’s total natural gas reserves are owned by only a handful of countries. Comparing the global consumption of 2019 to 2018, we can see that it increased only by 2% in 2019, while this rate was 5% in 2018. Obviously, the United States and China were the largest consumers.

According to Insider Monkey’s research, by 2035 demand for natural gas can be doubled, which will bring a difficult situation for the next generations. Consequently, those countries that have the largest gas reserves, feel the pressure to produce more gas to meet the increasing demands. Other efforts are made for discovering new sources, and from time to time we can hear new announcements of shale gas renewable resources, in South Africa, Central Asia and Africa.

Turkmenistan, the member state of the former Soviet Union is located in Central Asia, and as it possesses large reserves of natural gas, unfortunately it failed to make a good use of its strategic location. The next country is Iran that has got the second spot on the list, as it owns 1197.109 tcf of natural gas. As a matter of fact, this country has about the 16 % of natural gas reserves of the world.
