After writing about the largest pharma and biotech companies, Insider Monkey has come up with the list of the 5 largest chemical companies in the world.  The chemical companies are involved in producing industrial chemicals, and lots of other industries depend on their productions. There are further sub-industries, such as Specialty Chemicals, Diversified Chemicals, Commodity Chemicals, Industrial Gases and Fertilizers & Agricultural Chemicals. There are wide range of products on their palette, such as fertilizers, additives, advanced polymers, adhesives, sealants and specialty paints, pigments and coatings.

According to Insider Monkey’s research, 25% of U.S GDP is supported by chemicals industry. The biggest companies in the US are Linde, DuPont LyondellBasell and Dow. Actually, the global worth of this industry is 2.4 trillion in dollars, and unsurprisingly China is the biggest player on the market with its 35.8% of global chemical sales in 2018. As of 2018 China contributed with €1,198 billion in total sales. Comparing the numbers of 2017 we can see a considerable growth by 2.5%, total value was €3,347 billion in 2018.

Nevertheless, the year of 2020 has been difficult for the chemicals industry as well. As the demands decreased this year, chemical companies began a fight to keep up sales volumes. As for the 100 largest chemical companies, the total sales fell by 4.9%, as the global producing decreased, consequently lots of market struggled with overcapacity. Dow (NYSE:DOW) stands on the third spot on this list, with its amazing amount of total sales of $42,951 million in 2019.
