Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is a company that is making a lot of competitors sweat in most of its new ventures. A domain registration service gets added to the list and it might have an impact on lot of market players like Godaddy.com.
Sascha Segan, lead analyst at PCMag.com spoke to Julia Boorstin on CNBC and the point of discussion was Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s domain registration service. Boorstin asked Segan about the impact of this new step taken by the #1 brand in the world and how it could impact companies like GoDaddy.com, to which Sasha replied stating:
“Well Google’s just dipping their toes into the water here. Their new domain registration service is a closed Beta at the moment. Its invite only.”
This clears that this new service by Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is for testing currently and also to find out if it can make a good value add for the Google apps platform or their other cloud services. Segan said that this service should not be considered as something that is launched to muscle Godaddy.com. The new domain registration service can actually be much more than that which might help the company to sell the other cloud based services to individuals.
He was then asked about the place this new service might have in the overall business strategy of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and he said that the company is currently fighting with other major players like Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) for the loyalty of businesses and web developers when it comes to either the cloud based app suite or the cloud based information management suite. So this step might get the third party companies to get onboard with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) rather than partnering with Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) or Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT).
On being asked if this service would eat into Godaddy’s business, Segan told Boorstin that currently its in Beta version. However he feels that Godaddy’s customer base is pretty lousy and any good company with the kind of service package Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) can easily beat GoDaddy and he feels that the #1 brand has capability to provide a smoother service compared to Godaddy. Here is what he said about Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) taking over Godaddy’s space:
“The market is certainly ripe for a company with any kind of a more positive approach or more positive consumer view to take over some of that space.”
Segan said that as of today, we don’t know if there are going to be privacy concerns in the new domain registration service given its history for placing ads. However he said that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) might tweak the service as the beta goes on.
