Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (VNDA), InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC), Vince Holding Corp (VNCE): Small-Cap Winners Last Week


The biggest gaining Russell 2000 stocks last week  were Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:VNDA), InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) and Vince Holding Corp (NYSE:VNCE). In last week trading, these three companies posted nice gains in terms of stock price. In general the small cap index has gone up pretty well in the last one month. The overall raise in the small cap index in the past month was around 5%.

CNBC’s Seema Mody was reporting the small cap gainers on Friday and she mentioned that the small cap index is staging a comeback specially the gainers like Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:VNDA), InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) and Vince Holding Corp (NYSE:VNCE). She was mentioning the reasons she found out from analysts that track the Russell 2000 index and here is what she said:

“For some, the drop in price is being seen as a good buying opportunity. We did see a selloff in the month of March and April and the better than expected economic data here in the US. Remember the Russell houses many domestically oriented names (this was the second reason) and third is yield.”

The stocks in Russell 2000 offer a dividend yield and this attracts investors in the low price environment. While Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:VNDA) gained 32.65% last week, InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) and Vince Holding Corp (NYSE:VNCE) gained 23.32% and 18.35% respectively. This gain in a single week is very impressive indeed.

The shareholders of these companies have earned some good money due to the price increase. Baker Bros. Advisors  is among the biggest investors in Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:VNDA), holding approximately 4.5 million shares as of the end of the first quarter. Among the shareholders of InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) is Steelhead Partners with approximately 41 million shares, and Adage Capital Management owns around 1.3 million shares of Vince Holding Corp (NYSE:VNCE).
