Whether people admit it or not, everyone watches horror films and that is why everyone should know which ones are the most successful horror movie franchises of all time.

A genre that got started back in 1890 with the movie “Manoir du Diable”, horror movies have been a popular and weirdly attractive category for movie watchers. They seek to bring out in the audience a negative emotional reaction based on fear. Based on true events or wild imagination of the writer, these movies use different tactics to try to keep the watchers on the edge of their seats. This high demand has inspired directors to become innovative with their storytelling. Slasher horror movies are plain scary because of the portrayal of the antagonist. Psychological horrors build up the suspense based on the atmosphere and they use sound, camera work and acting skills to create jump scare moments. The recent introduction of found footage movies saw the atmosphere to be designed in such a manner that you will become a part of an uncertain journey along with the characters of the movie.

There are multiple successful horror franchises that received critical acclaim and prompted the production of sequels. Both the Predator and Alien series presented extra-terrestrial threats to humankind and this resulted in two crossover movies titled “Alien vs. Predator”. “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Scream” are iconic slasher movies with multiple sequels. “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Friday the 13th” brought to us two iconic horror characters – Freddy Kruger and Jason Voorhees and they came face to face in the “Freddy vs. Jason” movie. Other prominent franchises are “Halloween”, “Saw” and “Jaw”.
